Facilitation provides a forum in which a neutral third party, the facilitator, can assist a group in a variety of ways. The facilitator may
- help members of a group define and meet their goals,
- exchange ideas and information,
- solve a problem, or
- hold an effective meeting.
The facilitator promotes an understanding of common objectives and assists the group in achieving consensus around these objectives. This is accomplished by enabling collaboration and synergy while cultivating shared responsibility. The facilitator may work with the group to build sustainable agreements or create a "road map" of next steps that are structured around collaboration and a common goal.
Facilitation can assist organizations with visioning processes, the development of strategic plans, and other collaborative processes that necessitate the voice of multiple stakeholders.
